the lives we bought

While many North Americans are accustomed to living their lives in or around suburban expansion, I am fascinated by the efficiency and pace of the ever-present construction around me. Growing up in Brazil, I have always been interested in the aesthetics of suburbia presented to me through Hollywood. This project allowed me to explore repetition within the suburbs, past a point of romanticism and desensitization. The more these areas are documented, the more noticeable nuisances within them are.

Each photograph peels back layers of the American dream, leaving behind questions about privacy, use of resources, and architectural homogeneity. In a state that prides itself on its hard-working values, the way in which neighborhoods are built from the ground up in a matter of months is incredibly fitting. Perhaps the most obvious elements that stand out; luscious, vibrant green lawns are contrasted with the desert landscape around them. This project not only showcases Utah as the highest degree of heaven for real estate, but it also serves as a portrait of the average lives many Utahns live, as they settle into homes surrounded by construction.
